Contrary to popular belief, dimmer switches don’t dim lights by simply decreasing the voltage or current passing through the sunshine bulb. This is in contrast to a simple rheostat knob which can vary the voltage passing through a resistor that doesn’t use inductive electricity the way a light bulb does.
In the case of dimmer switches that dim lights, the switch has two functions: a: turn the sunshine on & off; and b. dim the sunshine for purposes of ambiance. When you turn the knob or flick the switch to dim the sunshine, you are arranging for the circuit to turn the light on & off at a frequency so fast that you do not actually notice the sunshine flickering.
This leads to 2 kinds of “opportunities” to waste energy & money:
1. Users will dim the lights, thinking that they’re saving energy & money. They could also be reducing the lighting (measured in lumens) by 60 %. However the energy reduction is more like 5 %.
2. Some dimmer switches have the on/off function as a separate feature, resembling a knob that one turns to dim the lights, but presses to turn the light on touch dimmer harrier or off.
