Contrary to popular belief, dimmer switches don’t dim lights by simply decreasing the voltage or current passing through the sunshine bulb. This is in contrast to a simple rheostat knob which can vary the voltage passing through a resistor that doesn’t use inductive electricity the way a light bulb does.

In the case of dimmer switches that dim lights, the switch has two functions: a: turn the sunshine on & off; and b. dim the sunshine for purposes of ambiance. When you turn the knob or flick the switch to dim the sunshine, you are arranging for the circuit to turn the light on & off at a frequency so fast that you do not actually notice the sunshine flickering.

This leads to 2 kinds of “opportunities” to waste energy & money:
1. Users will dim the lights, thinking that they’re saving energy & money. They could also be reducing the lighting (measured in lumens) by 60 %. However the energy reduction is more like 5 %.
2. Some dimmer switches have the on/off function as a separate feature, resembling a knob that one turns to dim the lights, but presses to turn the light on touch dimmer harrier or off. If the on/off function fails, in order that the sunshine never goes off when one presses it, In response to the popular myth, this is well solved — there isn’t a must replace the switch. You can just turn the knob all the way in which down so that the sunshine is “out.” For the reason that bulb shouldn’t be producing any light, it must not be using any energy, right Wrong!

But it would still use about 50 Watts of power. In addition, the user, thinking that they have turned the sunshine off, so that the bulb is using no energy, will leave it this manner. The facility utility measures energy in Kilowatt-hours, so this uses 36 Kilowatt-hours per month. And the user wonders why their electric bill is so high. The fact is, on this case it is time to replace the switch.

The second case will have similar results if the 2 functions are both effected by turning the knob. The user is then even more easily fooled into thinking that they are turning the sunshine off, even if the knob would not give the click that it used to provide when one turned the sunshine off the day it was first installed.

In the primary case, the user will likely turn the sunshine down less often. However the energy savings may be very small, for reasons much like what I have explained above for the second case.

A dimmer is useful – if one values the ambiance that it produces. But as an energy saver, it is vitally impractical.
